India’s Twin Village

If one looks at the global level, India is considered to be a country with the lowest tally of twins. On average, only 9 pairs of twins can be found among 1,000 newborns. However, Kodinhi is the only village of India where the birth rate is 45 pairs of twins per 1,000 birth. Now you ask, what’s the reason behind it? Well, there is no scientific explanation for this yet.

India’s Twin Village

A doctor named Krishnan Sribiju said that in most cases, the mothers of the pair of twins are over 5 feet and 3 inches. It has been observed that twins are born to mature women. Also, in the Kodinhi village, it has been a rule that women marry quite early and begin the family planning quickly after that. Plus, the village women are around 5 feet tall, which reduces the possibility.

Now you must be thinking when all the odds are against it, how can the village defy the general norm?

Some possible explanations

Doctors have come up with some possible explanation which speaks about the diet of Kodinhi people. Though there’s not anything extraordinary in the water they use or the food supplies, there must be some alternation which led to this, right?

Some possible explanations

All Dr. Sribiju could figure out was that this biological marvel started around 60 or 70 years back. Figuring out what exactly happened back then isn’t an easy task. However, a survey has revealed that women who moved into this village after marriage also demonstrated a high percentage of a twin birth. This also applies the same for women who moved out of the village after marriage.

Studies are being conducted at the village regularly to find a reliable justification for this phenomenon. It seems no matter how hard scientists try, there are some wonders of nature that can never be answered by science.

Is this genetic?

To find out whether this is genetic, a study was conducted in the year 2016 at Kodinhi. As there were similar communities like Kodinhi in Nigeria, Brazil, and Vietnam, the team of researchers decided to compare some particular genetic factors. The intention was to find out whether there’s any similarity between these communities.

Dr. Thirumalaswami Velavan, a researcher, clarified that they could not find any genetic link between these communities. Therefore, the real reason behind this unusual occurrence yet remains a mystery to science. For now, scientists do not have a justified reason. Though it remains a mystery until now, scientists are still trying to unravel it.
