The construction of Bailong Elevator began in the year 1999 in the month of October. Afterwards, it was opened for public use in the year 2002. However, the elevator has been under constant debate and scrutiny given the subjects such as its environment effects given the fact that this particular area has been designated as a World Heritage Site since the year 2002. The elevator was briefly stopped for a year with safety concerns as the cause rather than environmental concern.

The Guinness Book of World Records recognized the Bailong Elevator in the year 2015. It is located inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The elevator provides its passengers a mesmerizing view of the overall forest cover along with the massive monolith formations that includes the famous “Soldiers Gathering Together”. The overall time from getting to top of the ascent is just one minute and thirty-two seconds. There are a total of three elevators and each holds a capacity to carry 4,900 kg in a single go. The elevator can house around 50 people lifting them all the way to the top.

The overall expenditure for this particular project was close to £13 Million. Tourists from all over the world visit the Bailong Elevator to get a taste of the fear of rising to such a great height while gazing at the magnificent surroundings close by.  However, the use of this elevator is prohibited for the people who fear heights. Instead, they are advised to opt for a hike through the valley that takes about two to three hours to complete the journey. The lifts are made up of glass to help you look through the world from a bird’s point of view when high in the sky. When it comes to safety, the designers have placed earthquake detectors inside the elevators to ensure that in case any such event occurs, the concerned authorities can quickly evacuate the people taking a ride to the top or going down.

There have been mixed reviews about the project. While some spoke for the project, some spoke against it. The ones in favor said that the construction of the elevator has saved these mountains from excess human traffic. However, the ones against this project explained that the area was already exposed to 5 million visitors every year and didn’t need anything else to increase that number. Tourists suffering from serious health issues are also advised not to take a ride on the Bailong Elevator.
